How SCALAR Video prevented JGT from paying €10,000 in damage costs

Based in Rotterdam and active across Europe, De Jong-Grauss Transport (JGT) has spent more than 40 years specializing in container transport — from tank and refrigerated containers to complex ADR flows.
And, like any transporter with JGT’s level of expertise and reputation, the company places great trust in its drivers.

When trust isn’t enough

But one challenge kept coming back: more and more incidents on the road were turning into “he said, she said” situations — conflicting accounts, false accusations, and no way to prove what actually happened. And while the team naturally stood by their people, the reality was clear: without solid proof, resolving claims was causing tension and costing a lot more than it should.
Some drivers had already installed their own dashcam systems to mitigate the situation. But these initiatives were disjointed, uncoordinated, and not solving the problem at scale.

A structured approach to a recurring problem

That’s when JGT decided to test a more structured approach using SCALAR’s Video management solution, VMS.
It was a decision that paid off fast.
During the pilot phase, footage from the system made it possible to recover a EUR 4,000 claim from a third party. That single case confirmed what the team already suspected: when something happens on the road, having video evidence changes everything. Even their insurer responded positively, recognizing the added transparency.

Always there — never in the way

Another thing JGT quickly noticed is how naturally the solution fits into their operation: there is no added workload for planners, and drivers continue their work as usual. The system runs in the background, and you hardly see a difference.
Until there’s an incident… in which case the facts are there, ready to retrieve and replay.

Clear outcomes when it matters most

After this successful pilot, came the rollout. By January 2026, the system had been installed across the full fleet.
Since then:
  • Four major claims have been successfully challenged, amounting to more than EUR 10,000.
  • A dispute over a dangerous lane merge by another vehicle was quickly clarified using footage.
  • An alleged collision at a traffic light was resolved immediately, exonerating JGT’s driver who was wrongfully accused of violating a red light.
  • The overall number of incidents has dropped significantly compared to the same period last year.
Importantly, the system works both ways. It protects drivers when they are not at fault — which is most often the case — while also providing transparency when they are.

From hesitation to acceptance

As expected, introducing cameras was met with some hesitation from drivers at the start. But these early results made all the difference. Today, there’s a shared understanding across JGT: this is a solution that works for everyone involved. Drivers know they are backed by facts. The business gains clarity when it matters most.

“When we decided to move forward, it had to be a win-win. Our drivers need to feel protected on the road, and we need clarity as a business. This solution delivers both — without interfering with how people do their job,” explains [Jan Verlaan, CEO De Jong-Grauss Transport].

Looking ahead

With over 40 years in operation, De Jong-Grauss Transport is no stranger to adapting its fleet to changing demands. Its collaboration with ZF dates back many years, and this latest rollout also included upgrading its entire fleet of 107 trucks with new SCALAR EVO Touch hardware.
For now, their video management solution focuses on turning uncertainty into clarity. But the foundation is there to expand further, for example into real-time coaching.
Once clarity becomes part of your operation, it opens the door to more.
