In Krakow, SCALAR helps bring public transport where regular buses can’t

Orchestrated by SCALAR, Krakow's LajkBus is designed to offer convenient and affordable on-demand mobility in areas with limited public transport.

From February 2025, residents in the Skotniki district of Krakow, Poland — a district largely inaccessible by city buses due to its narrow and challenging streets — will be introduced to a new public transport service, offering on-demand ridesharing at the price of a standard bus fare. The new service, called LajkBus, is built and operated on the SCALAR fleet orchestration platform and has the capacity to transfer hundreds of passengers every day to the nearest tram station — or any other destination within the area of operation — via a dedicated mobile app.

To that end, we have adapted the SCALAR Traveler App to match the LajkBus brand and services based on the material provided by the City of Kraków.

Passengers can use the Traveler App to hail a ride instantly or even book a ride for later, indicating their pick-up and drop-off points. Once a ride is requested, the SCALAR algorithm will identify similar requests in real time and automatically match passengers to ensure everyone arrives at their destination on time, taking the most efficient route while maximizing vehicle occupancy. We also developed additional features to make the service accessible to more users and enhance flexibility.

The City of Krakow has been studying alternative public transport solutions as part of the EU research project SUM (Seamless Shared Urban Mobility), in an effort to make public transport accessible to more citizens in areas where standard buses are unable to operate.

The LajkBus on-demand public transport service is the first public automated on-demand service in Krakow, with the possibility of expanding to other areas after an 18-month pilot period.
